Saltbound is an independent ocean exploration atlas for iPhone. We built it for armchair explorers, students, and anyone who loves islands, maritime history, and the stories the sea still holds.
Inside the app you chart islands, practice survival skills, study historic vessels, explore island culture, and keep a personal logbook — all with a rich maritime dark-mode aesthetic. No account required: your bookmarks, journal, progress, and achievements stay on your device.

This Privacy Policy describes how Saltbound (the "Application") handles information when you use our ocean exploration atlas. The Application is provided by WAXING MOON LLC, 500 DeFoe St, Missoula, Montana 59802-2515, United States ("we", "us", or "our").
Information We Collect
Saltbound does not require an account, sign-up, or login. We do not ask for your name, email, or phone number inside the app. We do not run third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
The following data is stored locally on your device only:
- Island bookmarks and exploration progress
- Journal entries and personal notes
- Survival module progress, quiz results, and streaks
- Ship study progress and culture watchlist items
- Achievements, XP, and rank progression
- Cached images and weather snapshots for bookmarked islands
- Notification and Live Activity preferences you enable
Third-Party Content Services
To enrich your experience, the app may request public information from these services when you browse related content:
- Open-Meteo — current weather for bookmarked island coordinates (latitude and longitude only; no personal profile is sent).
- Wikimedia Commons — island and ship imagery referenced in the atlas and fleet sections.
- TMDB (The Movie Database) — poster artwork and public metadata for films and series in the Culture section. API requests are made from the app; your watchlist and journal are not transmitted to TMDB.
How We Use Information
Because we do not operate user accounts or collect personal data on our servers, there is nothing for us to profile, share, or sell. All features — Atlas, Survive, Fleet, Culture, and Logbook — operate using data stored on your device.
Data Storage & Retention
All of your content remains in the app's private storage on your device. There is no cloud sync and no remote backup operated by us. Deleting the app permanently removes associated local data from your device.
Notifications & Live Activities
If you enable notifications or Live Activities for survival challenges and widgets, those features use Apple's system frameworks on your device. We do not receive the content displayed on your Lock Screen or in notifications on our servers.
Children's Privacy
The Application does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because no personal data is collected or transmitted to us, the app is suitable for general audiences under COPPA and similar standards.
Your Control
You can edit or delete your local data at any time through the app — remove bookmarks, clear journal entries, reset progress in Settings, or uninstall the Application to remove all stored content from your device.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect app improvements or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the effective date above. The core commitment — local storage, no accounts, no sale of personal data — will not change without clear notice.
